Suspicious candy passed out in Missouri Christmas Parade

On December 6th 2016 during the Joplin Christmas Parade two of our officers were flagged down at 11th and Main.
A female reported that her son had been handed candy during the parade that was found to contain a pill.

A report was completed and an investigation is underway.

If anybody has any information about this incident, or had a similar experience, they are asked to contact the Joplin Police Department at 417-623-3131.

We always encourage parents to be aware of candy and other items that their children receive from people not known to them at Halloween, parades and other events.

Below are a few tips for candy safety provided by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission related to Halloween, but they are applicable to parades and other events:

• Children should not eat any treats before an adult has examined them carefully for evidence of tampering.

• Carefully examine any toys or novelty items received by trick-or-treaters who are younger than 3 years of age. Do not allow young children to have any items that are small enough to present a choking hazard or that have small parts or components that could separate during use and present a choking hazard

• Do not eat candy that has been unwrapped or broken

• Tell your children not to eat their candy until they return home

• Do not accept homemade treats, or fruit

• Only accept candies that cannot be easily tampered with

• Keep an eye out for small signs of tampering

If you do locate candy that has been tampered with, call your local law enforcement agency.

December 7th 1941 a day which will live in Infamy

Today is National Pearl Harbor Day a very sad and terrible day for our country.

On November 26, 1941, a Japanese task force (the Striking Force) of six aircraft carriers Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū, Hiryū, Shōkaku, and Zuikaku departed northern Japan en route to a position northwest of Hawaii, intending to launch its 408 aircraft to attack Pearl Harbor.

The attack commenced at 7:48 a.m. on Sunday December 7, 1941 when the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked the Naval Station Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, without warning and without a declaration of war, killing 2,403 American non-combatants, and injuring 1,178 others.

The attack sank two U.S. Navy battleships and damaged five others. It also damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, and one minelayer. Aircraft losses were 188 destroyed and 159 damaged. Canada declared war on Japan within hours of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the first Western nation to do so.

The attack came as a profound shock to the American people and on December 8, 1941 the United States declared war on Japan and entered World War II on the side of the Allies. In a speech to Congress, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called the bombing of Pearl Harbor "a date which will live in infamy".

Although Pearl Harbor Day is not a federal holiday – government offices, schools, and businesses do not close.  Some organizations may hold special events in memory of those killed or injured in the attack.
