Adrian man injured in motorcycle accident

On Sunday evening April 7th around 6:00 p.m. the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Bates County Sheriff's Office, Adrian Fire Department and Bates County EMS responded to a motorcycle accident on AA Highway and CR NE 10001 in rural northern Bates County.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the eastbound 2015 Indian Motorcycle driven by 40 year old John H. McMurphy of Adrian, Missouri ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.

Mr. McMurphy sustained moderate injuries and he was transported to Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville for treatment.

Obituary - Harold Covington

Harold Jean Covington, age 84, of Warsaw, Missouri, passed away quietly in his home on April 2, 2024. He was born September 15, 1939 in Mountain Home, Arkansas, the son of Velma Elliott and Howard Houston Covington.

He served in the United States Army and married Helga Wesier Covington with whom he had two sons, Houston and Roy Covington.

After his military service he moved to Kansas City, Missouri and worked for Ford Motor Company as an equipment operator for 30 years. During this time he met and married Barbara Jule Covington and together they had a daughter and a son, Dee and Joe Covington.

He was a step father to the children of wife, Billie Coon, and was proud to be a part of the lives of those three children, Ray, Marie and Richie Coon.

In the later chapter of his life he partnered with Lou Anne Wagelie and they lived a full life together in Sycamore Valley.

Harold found joy in family and nature. He was an avid fisherman, winning the Old Oar House Inn Catfish Tournament in 1989.

He loved to hunt, dance and sing and was a regular of The Valley Bar where he could be found with a Bud Light in his hand and an old country song on his lips.

Harold was preceded in death by his mother, Velma, his son, Roy, and two brothers, Carl Covington and James McLaughlin.

He is survived by three children, three stepchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and other relatives and many friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at the Reser Funeral Home. Interment will follow the funeral at the Shawnee Cemetery.

Obituary - Wilma Kay Vinyard

Wilma Kay Vinyard, age 73 of Butler, Missouri died Friday, March 29, 2024 at her home. She was born October 12, 1950 in Charles Fredrick and Wilma Blanche Hauser Saunders in Waterloo, Iowa.

Wilma, one of seven children, grew up and attended school in Waterloo, Iowa where she graduated high school. She had lived in Oshkosh, Nina, Berlin and Wautoma, Wisconsin before moving to Pleasant Hill and Butler, Missouri. Wilma was a homemaker and a Certified Nurses Assistance in Wisconsin. She married Gerald Edward Vinyard.

Wilma was known to be loving but yet ornery. She loved reading, doing crossword puzzles, and spending time with her cats and dogs.

Wilma is survived by four sons, Paul Ramirez of Butler, Missouri, James Ramirez of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Darrell Vinyard of Missouri and Scott Vinyard of Independence, Missouri; a daughter, Tracy Secrist and husband Steve, Pleasant Hill, Missouri; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Fred Saunders of Wisconsin and William Saunders of Texas; and three sisters, Hazel, Nancy and Judy Saunders all of Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerry Vinyard in 2013; and a sister, Norma Saunders.

Obituary - Norma Jean Burrus

Norma Jean Burrus, 74 of Nevada, MO, passed from this life Saturday, March 30, 2024, at her home to her Heavenly home following a lengthy illness. Norma was born on August 20, 1949 in Harwood, MO, to John Franklin Horning and Dolly Mae (Thompson) Horning. She was raised in the little town called Porshia, MO, before moving to El Dorado Springs, MO.

Norma married Terry Wehmeyer in 1968 and was blessed with three children. After their divorce, she then married Oran Burrus in 1986 and divorced in 1994.

Norma worked most of her life at multiple different jobs often sacrificing time for herself due to her strong determination to provide for her family. Those include the following; Little Brown Fox Egg Company of Harwood, MO, Fastrip, Shoe Factory, Shirt Factory, Casey General Store and Great Oaks Country Club all in Eldorado Springs, MO and Nelly Don, Nevada Fuel Mart, Cottey College, Moorefew, and Skills Unlimited all in Nevada, MO as well as being an Avon representative. Norma also enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She would always carry her digital camera to capture special memories. Norma also loved working with her cattle, crocheting and also loved her wind chimes.

Norma is survived by her three children; Cindy (Wehmeyer) Corbin and husband Renn, Christy (Wehmeyer) Bough and significant other Jeff Bloom, Devin Wehmeyer and wife Missy; eight grandchildren, Tosha (Bough) Howe, (Dan), Brandi (Corbin) Maus, (Jeremy), Scotty Bough (Tana), Shnya Bough her significant other Cody Burton, Tyler Kimzey and girlfriend Machelle Mullanix, Taylor Wehmeyer, George Rocco, Kallie Hardman, step grandson Ethan Maus and six great grandchildren, Sara Howe, Kohl Maus, Addison Howe, Trissalea Bough, Everleigh Burton, and Patience Maus. Three siblings, Dwayne and Kenneth Horning and Alma Stroer. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents John and Dolly Horning, two brothers, Gene and Donald Horning, her first husband, Terry Wehmeyer and a great granddaughter Alexis Howe.

There will be no viewing or visitation, out of respect our loved one's wishes.

With mixed emotions, we share some significant news. Our family has been called to serve as the Senior Pastor of North Cross United Methodist Church, and we'll be relocating in July.

These past five years in Adrian have been filled with immense joy and blessings, and the decision to leave wasn't easy.

We've grown deeply attached to this community, and bidding farewell is tough. Our hearts will always carry fond memories of our time here.

We've penned a letter expressing our gratitude and love to our faithful friends in Adrian. Know that you'll forever hold a special place in our hearts.
