Update from the City of Harrisonville Electric Department

A statement regarding the power outage that occurred shortly after 5 a.m. this morning. Early this morning, residents notified City staff of a large outage affecting portions of south and central Harrisonville.

After searching for several hours to find the source of the outage, crews were able to find a pole near Brickplant Road that had been struck by lightning - causing significant damage to the pole and to the services fed by the pole .

The pole was behind a gate that was locked with a chain, which crews had to cut through to begin making repairs. Shortly before noon, a small repair was made, restoring power for some residents.

At about 2:05 p.m., crews disabled service for a final time to make their final repairs and to fully restore power to all customers.

We understand that this outage lasted substantially longer than many that our crews battle and that residents were inconvenienced by this.
We appreciate your patience with our staff and want to assure you that all areas have been fully repaired.

From Michael G's Greenhouses

This is our final day for the season, and it looks like a rainy one. In a normal year rainy days are as close as I get to day off, so there were not a lot of days off this year. I have recovered thanks to Mitzi and Melanie helping everyone since Memorial Day. I am 71 now and I know some have concerns about whether I will be open next year.
The answer is that I have some things already ordered for 2024. Long term I have my hopes the gals can carry on, but I am not going anywhere in the near future.

In hindsight, I should have stayed open a bit longer. When I advertise in surrounding areas the ads have to be in the week prior to running them, so in a sense I have to predict the future. If you still have a need for plants come see us before we close at 2 today. I am going to go out and reduce things even lower by 9 this morning. We don't have the greatest selection, but garage sale prices.

Thanks to all who have been out this season. It was a good year, not the best nor the worst. Most of you know I am a Christian, God is my provider and He always gives me all I need, not always what I want. I am past the age of accumulating things, thankfully. The most important things aren't things. I plant seeds by the thousands in soil every year. I planted a few in people's hearts, and those are the ones I want to really see germinate. Everyone wants to go to Heaven, but you have to know the way.

Your spiritual GPS is not automatically going to get you there, in fact if you don't set it towards there you will have a rude awakening the instant you die. If you believe in Jesus, the time you spend here is the worst you will ever know.

If you don't believe, your time here will be the best you ever know. OK, I am done planting seeds. See you today or next year. God Bless everyone of my customers, you made my dream come true.

Even though he spent the majority of his career as an administrator, he was always a teacher at heart. He truly loved his students and had a passion for helping them find their way.

Virgil developed his love of farming during his high school years when he lived and worked with his future in-laws, Bob & Claudine Arnold. When Bob was ready to retire, Virgil and Sharon made the decision to take over the family farm rather than see the land sold, and they additionally purchased a farm adjacent to the family land. This was during the farm crisis of the early 1980's. They were able to make a go of it on the farm for a couple of years until they both decided to return to their careers as educators. For the next 30 years, he worked two jobs -teaching school during the day and farming in the evenings and on weekends. Sadly, he was only able to enjoy six months of retirement when his health began to fail him. Over the next several years, though limited physically, he was able to slow down and enjoy each day that was given to him. He was able to see every sporting event and activity of his grandchildren that he possibly could and was always happy to see his kids, friends, and any visitors that might come by.

During his career as an educator, Virgil worked in the Holden, Grandview, and Northwestern school districts before spending 30 years as a teacher and administrator in the Belton School District #124. The last fourteen years of his career, he served as Principal of Belton High School. He loved the students and families he worked with in Belton. In 2011, he achieved his lifelong dream of becoming "Dr. Poisal" as he earned his Educational Doctorate from Saint Louis University.

Virgil was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. He taught the "Nomads" Sunday School class at Harrisonville United Methodist Church for over forty years. He enjoyed studying the Bible and preparing weekly lessons. He believed teaching the class was carrying on a legacy handed down to him from his father.

Virgil was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon; parents: Don & Laura Poisal and Doris Weide; in-laws, Bob & Claudine Arnold; and sister, Kathy Ruff. He leaves behind his children: Bob & Kris Poisal and Todd & Betsy Kitchen; grandchildren: Devon Mansfield, Charlie & Jessica Puhr, Luke & Kylee Filer, Kurt Poisal & fiancé, Torey Alexander, Jacob & Elaina Poisal, and Krede Kitchen and Keastin Kitchen; great-grandchild, Dawson Puhr; brothers and sisters: Melvin & Shirley Poisal, Alvin & Connie Poisal, Janice Brindle, and Holly Morris; sister-in-law, Cheryl Huffman; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, family and friends.

McCarthy Jury Trial begins for Murder of Clinton Police Officer Gary Michael

The jury trial for Ian James McCarthy, the man accused of fatally shooting Clinton Police Officer Gary Michael in 2017, began on Monday June 5th.

Officer Michael was killed August 6, 2017, after stopping a 2008 Dodge Nitro for a registration violation near the intersection of Green and 2nd St.

The driver of that vehicle, McCarthy, allegedly stepped out of his vehicle into the street and shot Michael in the chest with a rifle, through his bulletproof vest.

McCarthy allegedly fled the scene of the shooting but crashed his vehicle near the scene of the shooting. He evaded arrest for two days, at which point he was taken into custody when a resident spotted McCarthy walking along the road and called 911.

The venue for the trial was changed from Henry County following a motion filed in September 2021. That motion was sustained, and the trial was scheduled for June of 2023 with voir dire of jury to be held in the Platte County Courthouse, with the opening statements and trial to be held in Jackson County.

McCarthy has remained in custody awaiting trial. A motion filed by his attorney to allow McCarthy to wear civilian clothing during the trial has been denied, and McCarthy will be required to wear partial restraints throughout the trial, although he will be allowed the use of his dominant hand to take notes during the trial.

On June 3rd, McCarthy’s attorneys filed a motion for mistrial or to strike the death penalty as an option in his case. McCarthy stands trial for three felony charges: Murder in the First Degree, Armed Criminal Action, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, and unless the judge rules otherwise pursuant to this motion or a subsequent one, McCarthy potentially faces the death penalty if convicted.

The next scheduled appearance in his trial takes place on Monday, June 12th.
